GIS data set consisting of more than 200,000 polygons that represent areas where bedrock is at and near the land surface. Attribute table includes descriptions of multiple features. Transcription from older publications that used less detailed base maps typically have less accuracy. Those acquired using air photos, lidar, and field visits are most accurate. In many cases outcrops enclose multiple small bedrock exposures. In some areas, outcrop is represented by partially overlapping, but differently shaped polygons. These represent areas where data were acquired from 2 or more authors. Note that the extent to which attribute fields are populated is extremely variable Outcrop polygons were digitized by MGS staff in the course of mapping projects, digitally transcribed from analog (paper maps scanned and rectified), and acquired from digital datasets of other organizations, individuals, and companies. Misplacement of some attributes and other inconsistencies are the result of the compilation of diverse datasets, each with somewhat different attribute table structure.
